Wistron Corporation announced that its forest carbon sink project, developed in collaboration with Yongzai Forestry Co., Ltd., has been approved by the Ministry of Environment under Taiwan’s Carbon Offset Voluntary Reduction Program. The project is the first forest carbon sink initiative in Taiwan to adopt an Improved Forest Management (IFM) approach. By combining sustainable forest management with scientific carbon sink practices, the project aims to strengthen forests' carbon absorption capacity while integrating climate action and nature conservation, setting an important benchmark for the development of nature-based carbon sinks in Taiwan.
Located in Checheng Township, Pingtung County, the project covers approximately 96 hectares of regenerated forest area. The initiative is jointly promoted by Wistron and Yongzai Forestry, with the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute serving as the project registration and implementation advisor. As the professional forestry management partner, Yongzai Forestry is responsible for forest management and technical planning. Through forest tending, selective thinning, and sustainable management practices, the project seeks to improve forest health and productivity, thereby enhancing the forest's carbon sink potential.
The project is implemented under the Ministry of Environment’s Carbon Offset Voluntary Reduction Program and follows the officially recognized methodology, AR-TMS0002 Carbon Sink Project for Improved Forest Management . Forests naturally absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide during their growth, retaining carbon within trees and forest ecosystems and serving as important natural carbon sinks. Enhanced forest management not only increases carbon sequestration benefits but also supports ecosystem health and biodiversity conservation.
The project has an initial duration of 20 years, with the option for extension. Throughout the project period, forest management activities, carbon sequestration quantification, and long-term monitoring will be conducted in accordance with the methodology requirements. Emission reduction outcomes will be verified by an accredited third-party organization and submitted to the Ministry of Environment for review. Upon approval, the Ministry will issue Voluntary Emission Reduction Credits (VERCs) based on the verified results.
Wistron stated that while carbon reduction remains the cornerstone of corporate net-zero strategies, natural carbon sinks serve as an essential complementary mechanism. Through its partnership with Yongzai Forestry, Wistron is integrating climate action with natural resource management, advancing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) while aligning with global trends in climate and biodiversity governance.
Looking ahead, Wistron will continue collaborating with professional organizations and partners to promote initiatives related to natural carbon sinks and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging its strengths in technology and sustainable management, the company aims to create long-term value for climate governance and the preservation of natural resources.
